Viola Desmond Bust Unveiling (November 8, 2021)

On November 8, 2021—exactly 75 years after Viola Desmond’s historic act of defiance against racial segregation at the Roseland Theatre in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia—a life-size bronze bust created by sculptor Chippie Kennedy (NSS Elected Member) was unveiled in Halifax.

The ceremony took place at the Delmore “Buddy” Daye Learning Institute, an African Nova Scotian education center in Halifax’s north end. The bust holds a place of honor at the entrance, serving as an inspiration for students and visitors to reflect on combating racism and advancing social justice.

Chippie Kennedy described Desmond not only as a courageous Black woman who stood against injustice but also as a pioneering Black businesswoman in the 1940s. The National Sculpture Society highlighted the unveiling, noting how the portrait honors Desmond’s challenge to segregation by refusing to move from the whites-only section of the theatre.

This bust is distinct from later monuments, such as the 2025 installation on Gottingen Street in Halifax’s north end (created by another artist). Kennedy’s 2021 work focuses on a classical, expressive portrait that captures Desmond’s strength and dignity.
