Son of the Fisher

Son of the Fisher is a life-size portrait bust sculpted from life. The sitter, a young boy from the historic fishing town of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, connects the work to a place shaped by the sea, tradition, and generations of maritime life.

Working from life allowed the portrait to develop through close observation. During each sitting, subtle changes in posture, attention, and expression revealed something new. I was interested not only in creating a likeness, but also in capturing the sitter’s quiet presence and his connection to the place he calls home.

The sculpture was cast in plaster and completed with a tinted finish. Its layered colour gathers within the marks and textures of the surface, preserving traces of the sculpting process while giving the finished portrait depth, warmth, and emotional presence.
